We very much enjoyed staying at La Roca. The villa is spacious, with lots of room for people to congregate both indoors and out. The villa pool in back is great, as is the area around the pool. One of the nice surprises was the number of flotation devices, balls of different kinds, games (both indoor and out), books, and other activity-facilitating items that are available at the villa. During the week that we were there, a cleaning lady came to clean the entire house, gardeners came to trim outside, and pool cleaners arrived to keep the pool in good shape.
We also took advantage of the fact that La Roca is part of a development that has a tennis court and two pickleball courts that are lit at night. We didn't have much difficulty getting onto the tennis court during the day. The courts are a short walk from La Roca. Just past the courts is the Zoetry hotel that has a large pool with a swim-up bar and poolside food during the day. The kids loved that. The hotel also had some kid activities, including outdoor movies one night, which were a hit. It has other amenities, including restaurants and a spa, that can be accessed by guests at La Roca. We ate at an outdoor restaurant down by the beach that was nice.
We generally accessed the beach by going through the hotel. It's not really a place to swim because of steepness and riptides but there is light, soft sand that makes it a beautiful place to hang out. We rented cars, which is probably a necessity if you want to enjoy San Jose del Cabo and surrounding areas--or do things like shopping for food to cook at the villa. La Roca is probably about 20 minutes by car from the main area of San Jose del Cabo; there is a supermarket and some restaurants that are a little closer. We really liked San Jose del Cabo.
It might make sense to prepare a book for guests that describes things to do and places to go in San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. It would also be helpful to communicate villa and hotel details (what is available, when, etc.) prior to guest arrival. That could include tips on where to park to walk in to the main plaza, restaurants and galleries in SJD. In general, though, La Roca is both a great place for a large family to chill and a good place to use as a base for exploring the Cabo area. We fully recommend it.
